MicroTrailers® vs. Roof Racks Q&A

Why would I want a "MicroTrailer®"?
Because it gives you space that makes sense, when you need it. It’s the perfect solution because nothing can instantly increase a vehicle’s carrying capacity like a trailer. The SportsRig® MicroTrailer® can carry six bicycles (more with longer load bars), multiple recumbents, tandems, trikes, and quad bikes. It can also carry boats such as kayaks (up to 23 feet long with an optional modular tongue extension and a DOT flag or light), or small boats such as sailboats and inflatables. The MicroTrailer® can also accommodate dozens of readily available cargo boxes, including inexpensive RubberMaid® models.

Why wouldn’t I want just a simple roof rack?
A roof rack doesn’t meet all needs, even though its one of the most common ways to transport sports gear. But our market research shows that both men and women almost universally complain of the hassles of loading and unloading bikes or kayaks on their cars’ roofs. Racks atop cars are simply too hard to reach, a problem that’s even worse with SUVs. Add lots of back problems and a well-founded dislike of overhead lifting…and there’s our case for the MicroTrailer. Also, no matter how careful everyone is, scratching and denting a vehicle’s expensive finish is common. Wind noise generated by roof racks and topside-mounted gear is also commonly noted (often barring the use of a sunroof!) as well as a drop in gas mileage.

How about a hitch-mounted system?
A hitch-mounted system isn’t the answer either. Does this sound familiar? "…Limited number of bikes can be accommodated" or “ . . .not good for carrying tandems and impossible for recumbents" or "…my inside bikes get trapped!" We also hear other common complaints like "…the one I have restricts access to the rear door of my SUV" or "…it’s often in the way if I don’t remove it."

So how does your MicroTrailer® eliminate these roof racks and hitch rack problems?
This low-profile trailer allows loading and unloading bicycles, kayaks, and other gear with extreme ease and speed. And the whole rack is usable because it’s easily reached. In addition, because the trailer is away from the vehicle, denting or scratching a vehicle’s expensive finish is a thing of the past. There’s also no concern with overhead clearance problems, wind noise is eliminated entirely, and gear rides in the vehicle’s slipstream for great aerodynamics when compared to gas robbing roof rack systems.

What about the aerodynamics of roof racks vs. your MicroTrailer®?
Roof rack systems are essentially high drag accessories that wreak havoc with a vehicle’s aerodynamics. Fuel economy drops at highway speeds, even more when loaded with gear. Thinking logically, lugging extra gear carrying capacity around when it isn’t needed costs money in lost fuel economy. Also, some folks drive larger vehicles in order to carry all this gear around when, with a MicroTrailer, a smaller vehicle could do the job, again saving a considerable amount of money in vehicle and fuel costs.

Why don’t I just buy a cheap utility trailer and use that?
For one thing, conventional trailers can be pretty ugly behind you and when stored! The problem with them is that they’re typically heavy, bulky, and occupy a lot of space while not in use. In addition, a conventional trailer’s suspension system is designed to transport heavy cargo, so they bounce around and make a lot of noise, especially with light loads. We’ve all seen them do this.

So how is the SportsRig® MicroTrailer® different from a "farm trailer"?
The SportsRig MicroTrailer is a custom sport utility trailer using the latest technology. If it looks like it came out of a design studio, it’s because it did. Automotive designers helped shape this sophisticated, high-tech rig. The lines are clean and balanced. You don’t see clunky looking trailer tires -- you see high-performance chrome motorcycle wheels and colorful shocks that simply stand out. The entire rig is powder coated in granite grey, and it looks great with Yakima® and Thule® rack accessories.

Add to that our new colorful polyethylene fenders and optional Cargo Platforms and you’ve got a revolutionary new MicroTrailer® that looks like it belongs behind an exotic sports car, not a tractor. The fenders and optional Cargo Platforms come in your choice of yellow, black or grey.
